FIDO

FIDO, “The Watchdog of K’gari”, aims to ensure the wisest use of K’gari’s natural resources.

FIDO is best known for its successful campaigns to stop the devastating environmental impact of sandmining and the destructive logging of K'gari's magnificent forests, but the organization has actively addressed all aspects of management of Fraser Island. FIDO wants K'gari to be a well managed National Park with controlled tourism and other compatible uses.

FIDO prepared the very first management strategy for K'gari in 1975. This was revised and developed further in 1978, 1987, 1990 and 1991. FIDO’s watchdog role now focuses on the management of the Great Sandy Region. Compatible land-uses of well managed and controlled tourism, education and scientific research for the island have been encouraged. FIDO has actively opposed incompatible land uses including sandmining, logging operations, and urban land development.

FIDO is more than just an environmental advocate; it puts in a huge amount of physical effort. FIDO has contributed thousands of hours of voluntary effort controlling weeds in the areas of worst weed infestation and growing native plants and regenerating lost pandanus.

FINIA

Our Vision

“To protect K’gari’s natural integrity, ecological assets and unique beauty through collaborative management, community education and targeted rehabilitation works.”

FINIA was formed after the K’gari (Fraser Island) Weeds and Pests Workshop in late 2005.

The members of FINIA decided to collaborate on a number of issues that were threatening the future sustainability of K’gari’s natural environment.

The Alliance is a means to bring stakeholders together to implement common goals with respect to often differing organisational objectives in a proactive and respectful manner. Members operate under an agreed Terms of Reference.

FINIA has no membership fees and is composed only of groups committed to sustaining the natural integrity of Fraser Island together.

Sunshine Coast Collaborators

Sunshine Coast Environment Council

We work closely with Sunshine Coast community stakeholders including our member groups to advocate for environmental protection in response to development pressures from our rapidly growing local community. This includes property developers as well as local, state and federal governments. We acknowledge that we are in a climate emergency and urgent action is needed.

Alongside environmental protection for our region, we also advocate for deeper and worldwide environmental issues such as climate change and resource depletion. Although these issues cannot be solved by just one person, we believe that with your support and our assistance, we can create change towards a sustainable future.
